The traditional model of education – where subject areas such as math, language arts, and science are taught separately during designated times throughout the school day – has long dominated the academic world, often beginning as early as preschool. Students in classrooms implementing this traditional model of learning experience subjects primarily from the pages of a textbook, in isolation from one another, never truly having the opportunity to understand the interconnectedness of these subjects and how they rely on and build upon one another, nor how the information being presented is applicable in the real world.
At Beacon, we believe in giving our students every opportunity to maximize their learning, so they can make meaningful progress and successful gains well into the future. Which is why we’re so committed to creating and delivering an innovative school program inspired by the latest in scientific research, one that is focused on an integrative approach in the classroom. As we continue to understand more about the human brain and how information is processed and retained, we invest in developing a curricula rich in diverse subject matter and a holistic approach to education.
Students at Beacon are academically, physically, and socially engaged through the use of integrative learning pedagogy that fosters curiosity, exploration, and greater understating of subject matter and corresponding concepts. Let’s use cooking as an example: students choose a recipe (reading), make a list of ingredients needed (writing), go to the grocery store to purchase those items (math, social skills), measure the ingredients (math, motor planning), and follow the recipe (organization and sequencing). And of course, the very best part: they get to enjoy the meal!
