Academic Support
Individuals with autism often face significant challenges in areas such as social, emotional and communication skills. Impairments in physiological and cognitive development may also be a factor, increasing the likelihood that supports and accommodations specific to the student are necessary to ensure safety and success within the school environment.
To improve functioning in areas of impairment and delay, evidence-based therapies and interventions are provided, while access to differentiated instruction in an integrated educational setting nurtures the whole child.
Each area of development is assessed and addressed including communication, social and motor skills, cognitive functions such as emotions, memory, attention, visual-spatial skills, executive functioning, and overall psychological and physiological health.
In order to appropriately and effectively support the needs of our learners, Beacon believes in collaboration between families, school staff, and medical professionals involved in the treatment of our students. Consistent collaboration among each individual’s team is the cornerstone of our program and allows us to optimize learning opportunities for our students, while navigating and eliminating obstacles that may prevent their progress.
One of the most important catalysts for success is continuity between school and home. Consistency in areas such as student expectations, reinforcements, and supports creates stability for our learners and increases the generalization of important academic, social, and life skills. We achieve continuity through our collaborative model, and encourage families to be active participants throughout their child’s academic career at Beacon. We are never too busy to meet with our families, whether on campus or in the home, and our staff regularly communicates student progress through daily logs, emails, phone calls, or informal meetings.
